Rob Duffy: Notes from the Drought

Little did anyone expect, on May 2nd, that with the mid afternoon temperature at a bracing 12 degrees  and a healthy dollop of some 7.5 mms of rain, we would be soon regarding the latter with some nostalgia and the former as an uncomfortable memory

Temperatures rose steeply that week up to the torrid Bank Holiday week end, only to plunge down again, to once again rise to the low 20’s by the 19th and here they remained by and large till the end of the month. A trip to Bodnant Gardens, with the Friends of Calderstones Park, on the 25th, witnessed 7mm of rain( fortunately towards the end of the visit), and a couple of days later we heard thunder: The air was coming from a southerly direction.

Rain was scanty and there was a feeling this May was a bit unusual not least because late month temperatures were hitting the mid 20’s.The average afternoon temperature was up 1.7deg. from the previous May.

Generally, June temperatures were in the low 20’s, with most of what little rain there was coming in the middle of the month. Things were about to drastically change, however, with late June temperatures hitting a Liverpool high, of 31C, on the 26th.

The average afternoon temperature was 3 deg.up on the previous June.

The hot weather lasted and 31 degrees was experienced again on the 8th July with a somewhat troubling 23 day gap in rainfall ending on July 13th. Temperatures slumped in the middle of the month but by the 27th we were back to 30 C.

The average afternoon temperature was nearly 4deg.up on the previous July.

The rainfall of the second weekend in August ended the drought, with 32 mm recorded in one “dump”, the heaviest amount since the very wet November of 2016.
